India Shocked by Allegations of Forced Gender Reassignment Surgery in Uttar Pradesh
A deeply disturbing case has emerged from Uttar Pradesh, India, raising serious questions about medical ethics, patient consent, and alleged exploitation within the healthcare system.
Mujahid, a 20-year-old man, woke up disoriented in a hospital bed at Beg Rajpur Medical College, struggling to understand how he had ended up there. According to his account, the last clear memory he had was visiting the apartment of Om Prakash, a man he had known for nearly two years. What Mujahid describes next has sent shockwaves across the region.
For an extended period, Mujahid claims Prakash had been persistently harassing and manipulating him. On the day of the incident, Mujahid says he suddenly became confused and physically unwell. As he drifted in and out of consciousness, he recalls hearing Prakash say something that left him terrified: that Mujahid was “now a woman” and that Prakash planned to take him to Lucknow and marry him.
When Mujahid fully regained awareness, he realized that his body had been permanently altered through a medical procedure he says he never agreed to. According to police reports, Prakash allegedly posed as Mujahid’s father in order to authorize the surgery, deceiving hospital staff and bypassing standard consent safeguards.
The young man’s family says they were completely unaware of any planned medical procedure. Mujahid’s father, shocked by what had happened to his son, immediately filed a police complaint after learning the details. Authorities have since launched a formal investigation into both Om Prakash and the medical facility involved.
Law enforcement officials are now examining how such a procedure could have been carried out without the patient’s informed consent, and whether hospital protocols were ignored or deliberately violated. Medical experts say that consent is a fundamental requirement for any life-altering treatment, and that impersonation or falsification of identity, if proven, would constitute a grave criminal offense.
Human rights advocates have also weighed in, calling the allegations a serious violation of personal autonomy and bodily integrity. “If these claims are verified, this represents not only a criminal act but a catastrophic failure of medical oversight,” one activist stated.
As investigations continue, the case has sparked nationwide debate about patient protection laws, the vulnerability of young adults to manipulation, and the responsibility of medical institutions to verify consent beyond doubt. For Mujahid and his family, however, the focus remains on accountability and justice for what they describe as an irreversible betrayal of trust.
Authorities have assured the public that strict action will be taken if wrongdoing is confirmed.
